Shashikala Saigal better known by her first name was a veteran actress and had acted in over 100 movies. She played supporting roles in hundreds of Bollywood films. Shashikala bagged two Filmfare awards for her work in Aarti and Gumrah. The actress had also played a notable role in the popular television show Son Pari.
Born on 4th August 1932 Shashikala debuted with Shaukat Hussain Rizvi's movie Zeenat in which she appeared in a Qawwali scene. Later she got the chance to work with Shammi Kapoor in film Daku (1955). She rose to fame with her role in the Hindi film Pugdi (1948) produced by Prem Narayan Arora. She got roles in V. Shantaram's Teen Batti Char Raasta (1953) and a few other movies. She continued her acting journey even after marriage with Om Prakash Saigal and gave many notable performances. She went on to appear in popular movies like Bimla, Sujata, Aarti, Anupama, Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Waqt, Gumrah, Khubsoorat, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Shashikala bagged two Filmfare awards for her work in Aarti and Gumrah. In the 80s her acclaimed performances came in films like Phir Wahi Raat, Souten, Sargam. She performed in supporting roles in more than 100 films. She was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri by the Indian government for her unparalleled contribution to the world of cinema and arts in 2007 and was also conferred with the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award at the V. Shantaram Awards in 2009.
Shashikala also performed in a few television serials, including Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai for Sony, Apnaapan for Zee TV, Dil Deke Dekho for Sab TV, and Son Pari for Star Plus. She had roles in Mother 98, Pardesi Babu, Baadshah, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, and Chori Chori.
